Role Description

We are seeking a Junior Control & Automation Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing control systems for various industrial process applications.  This position can be based out of either Ida Grove IA or our Canadian office.

The ideal candidate will have an electrical engineering qualification with knowledge and/or experience in industrial process control hardware architecture design and software system integration.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Working within a team to deliver professional engineering and system integration services.
  • Design of industrial control systems according to all applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Development of engineering deliverables, including but not limited to project reports, C&I design criteria, design option studies, equipment specifications, instrument lists and data sheets and cable schedules.
  • Develop electrical, control and instrumentation engineering drawings, including system architecture diagrams, piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), network diagrams, cable block diagrams, logic diagrams, installation detail drawings, instrument loop diagrams, general arrangement drawings, motor control centre schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, power distribution diagrams, panel layout drawings.
  • Design and implement control systems for industrial processing, mining, feed & grain handling and food & beverage processes while ensuring functionality, safety, and reliability.
  • Develop functional requirement documents to capture process control system requirements prior to software development.
  • Program and configure PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), DCS’s (Distributed Control Systems), HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
  • Conduct system testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning to ensure proper operation and performance as per specifications.
  • Provide technical support and guidance during installation, startup and operations phases.
  • Provide maintenance and operational support for existing control systems.
  • Perform periodic system upgrades and modifications to improve efficiency and meet regulatory requirements.
  • Keeping up to date with industry trends and advancements in control systems technology.
  • Interfacing with other business departments, clients, suppliers and contractors to coordinate project work and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Work with other team members to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology to enhance safety and functionality and reduce cost.
  • Performing site visits to gather information related to projects or scope out new work opportunities.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
  • Registered with APEGS or other Canadian provincial professional engineering regulatory body.
  • Experience in industrial control systems design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Experience in PLC and DCS programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, etc.) and HMI/SCADA software (Ignition, Factory Talk View, WinCC, etc.).
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, etc.).
  • Experience with control system hardware design, including selection of sensors, actuators, and instrumentation.
  • Understanding electrical schematics, P&IDs and control system architecture and networking diagrams.
  • Knowledge of industry and safety standards and regulations (ISA, IEEE, CSA, OSHA, NFPA, etc.) applicable to industrial control systems.
  • Understanding and applying safe control system design and programming concepts.
  • Knowledge of electric power systems and components.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or other data centric design tools will be an advantage.
  • Experience in grain & feed industries, mining or food and beverage industry will be an advantage.
