Senior Automation and Engineering Project Manager

We are seeking a Senior Control & Automation Engineer / Project Manager to lead the delivery of industrial automation projects based out of our Saskatoon office, which serves as Comco Controls main office. This role combines hands on engineering expertise with project leadership responsibilities, managing technical teams while coordinating client relationships and project expectations.

Role Description

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical Leadership

-Design and implement industrial control systems in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices.

-Develop electrical and control engineering deliverables, including but not limited to:

  • Control & instrumentation design criteria 
  • System architecture and network diagrams 
  • Process flow diagrams and P&IDs 
  • Instrument lists and data sheets 
  • Cable schedules 
  • Equipment specifications 
  • Motor control centre schematics 
  • Wiring and power distribution diagrams 
  • Panel layouts 
  • Installation detail drawings

-Design and implement automation systems for industries such as mining, grain handling, bulk materials handling, and industrial processing.

-Select and integrate control system hardware including sensors, instrumentation, and actuators.

-Develop functional requirements documents for control system software development.

-Oversee programming and configuration of PLCs, DCS systems, HMIs, VFDs, motor starters and any other intelligent network devices.

-Oversee system testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and startup support.

-Stay current with industry trends and advancements in automation technology.

Project Management & Leadership 

  • Lead automation and engineering teams to successfully execute projects.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while balancing schedule, cost, and scope.
  • Coordinate project resources with department managers.
  • Prioritize tasks to ensure project deadlines are met.
  • Manage project budgets, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Implement structured change management processes.
  • Conduct site visits for project development, information gathering, and commissioning activities.
  • Communicate regularly with clients and build strong stakeholder relationships.
  • Coordinate field installation and startup activities.
  • Participate in project estimates, proposals, and business development efforts.
  • Ensure project teams follow internal processes and continuously improve workflows.

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer registration with APEGS or another Canadian engineering regulatory body.
  • 5–10+ years of experience in industrial automation or control systems engineering.
  • Experience managing engineering or automation projects.

Technical Experience

  • PLC and DCS programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, etc.).
  • HMI/SCADA platforms such as Ignition, FactoryTalk View, or WinCC.
  • Industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
  • Control system hardware design and instrumentation selection.
  • Development and interpretation of electrical schematics and P&IDs.
  • Industrial electrical power systems and components.
  • Knowledge of applicable standards such as ISA, IEEE, CSA, NFPA, and OSHA.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or other engineering design tools.
  • Understanding of process control software development lifecycle.

Preferred:

  • Experience in grain & feed, mining, or food & beverage industries.
  • PMP certification or equivalent project management training.
  • Experience with cloud platforms or version control systems.
