Automation & Control Systems Specialist (PLC) - Kearl Lake, Alberta

The Role

11 Hours/Day; 2 weeks on/off rotation

We are seeking an experienced Automation & Control Systems Specialist (PLC) to support industrial control systems at Kearl Lake. The ideal candidate brings 7+ years of oil and gas experience, including 5+ years of hands-on experience programming and commissioning Rockwell PLC systems, with strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently in a site-based environment.

This role combines PLC programming and commissioning, control system troubleshooting and optimization, lifecycle management, and integration with third-party systems. You will support system improvements and new equipment installations, configure and commission Rockwell and Allen-Bradley control systems and interfaces, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and help improve the reliability, security, and long-term performance of the site’s industrial control environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage industrial control system improvement and lifecycle projects, including cross-functional coordination and the loading and storage of system data backups.
  • Program and commission Rockwell PLC systems, including Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 1756.
  • Support new equipment installations, including adding buildings to the network and responding to new requests in a greenfield environment.
  • Program and test simple and complex control logic.
  • Configure and maintain third-party interfaces using Modbus, EtherNet/IP, and related protocols.
  • Troubleshoot functional disruptions and help reduce downtime.
  • Commission Allen-Bradley-based HVAC systems.
  • Set up third-party interfaces with Allen-Bradley PLCs serving as data concentrators, including power monitors and protection relays.
  • Set up and commission DeviceNet networks for Rockwell motor control centres.
  • Stay current with advancements in control systems technology and integrate suitable solutions into existing architectures.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance business performance through emerging or evolving technologies.
  • Drive collaboration, innovation, and improved system performance.
  • Optimize control systems to improve performance, reliability, and efficiency, including leading upgrades and enhancements in accordance with client-controlled systems and standards.
  • Develop tools, methodologies, and work processes to increase system reliability and sustainment efficiency in accordance with client-controlled systems and standards.
  • Create and implement a strategy to enhance the security and resilience of the industrial control environment while supporting process control objectives and client standards.
  • Participate in planning and executing a cost-effective lifecycle management strategy that maintains system sustainability, security, and operational efficiency in a greenfield environment.
  • Coordinate with the client DeltaV integration team and support testing, validation, and commissioning activities for DeltaV control systems to confirm functionality, reliability, and safety.
  • Document completed tasks and lessons learned to support repeatable success in future projects.

Qualifications

  • 7 or more years of experience in the oil and gas industry.
  • More than 5 years of hands-on experience programming and commissioning Rockwell PLC systems, including Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 1756.
  • Ability to program and test simple and complex logic.
  • Experience configuring and maintaining third-party interfaces using Modbus, EtherNet/IP, and related protocols.
  • Experience commissioning Allen-Bradley-based HVAC systems.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC data concentrator interfaces, including power monitors and protection relays.
  • Experience setting up and commissioning DeviceNet networks for Rockwell motor control centres.
  • Ability to troubleshoot functional disruptions and work independently without supervision.
  • Knowledge of system interfaces in a greenfield environment.
  • Ability to work within client-controlled systems and standards.

Work Schedule:

This is a site-based position at Kearl Lake working 11 hours per day on a regular 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off rotation.
