Role Description

The Senior Electrical & Controls Design Technologist / Design Coordinator is a team player with a safety, quality, and value focus and will be responsible for all design aspects associated with the overall electrical and controls design and CAD coordination, design engineering on a project, including the production of drawings, documents, and models, and will mentor and coach junior and intermediate drafters, designers, and design technologists.  The position reports to the Automation Manager.

Primary Job Tasks

  • Lead our electrical design efforts and manage design and CAD coordination and documentation processes
  • Mentor junior and intermediate design team members.
  • Design and drafting in 2D & 3D AutoCAD / Autodesk Software and Smart Electrical and Instrumentation Design/Engineering Software
  • Complying to, and assisting the Automation Manager to lead, drive and implement continuous improvements in company design workflows, processes, and procedures, including participation in, and performing design checks and reviews
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure project alignment and technical accuracy.
  • Manage Design/CAD files, ensuring compliance with standards and best practices.
  • Oversee project timelines, deliverables, and documentation.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for design systems and software.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to project teams during the design and implementation phases.
  • Conduct reviews and quality assurance of designs and drawings.
  • Assist in the development of project specifications and standards for electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Maintain organized documentation and version control for all design files
  • Produce Process Flow Diagrams, P&IDs, instrumentation datasheets, single line and three-line diagrams, power distribution drawings, block diagrams, control system design, MCC, motor starter cabinet, VFD panel, PLC Panel, power distribution panel, lighting panel, junction box, network cabinet and other panel design, layout, wiring diagrams, lists and schedules, including motor lists, instrumentation lists, and cable schedules, amongst others
  • Perform lighting modelling and design, electrical room sizing, and design electrical room and equipment layout drawings, cable sizing, cable and cable tray routing and layouts based on functional and CSA and/or local standards
  • Select and source suitable and cost-effective CSA certified hardware components and perform panel/ equipment testing and reports and ensure compliance to CSA specifications.
  • Site trips to investigate electrical/control system requirements and on-site commissioning

Qualifications

Experience, Qualifications and Other Requirements

  • Electrical technologist qualification or a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a recognized educational institution with 8 or more years of experience as electrical and controls designer
  • Competent in the understanding and the application of CSA standards and other applicable regulations, codes, and standards
  • Strong background in electrical and controls design, proficiency in CAD software and data centric control and electrical design tools, and experience in coordinating design projects from conception to completion.
  • Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD and Autodesk 2D/3D as well as Smart / Bulk Production Design Software design Tools.
  • Proven experience in electrical design and controls.
  • Ability to review and ensure accuracy in design documentation and drawings.
  • Strong project management and communication skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with team members and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
